Academic Intervention Program Enhances Graduate Students’ Writing Skills

To enhance the academic writing skills of first-year graduate students, an academic writing workshop was held on October 1, 2023, on the second floor of Cor Jesu College’s H.E. Hall. The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Harry Dave B. Villasor from the College of Education, Arts, and Science. Its primary objective was to address several areas of improvement in the participants’ academic writing, including addressing grammatical errors in sentences, refining skills in paraphrasing and summarizing articles or research, and applying these techniques by proofreading and editing. Moreover, the workshop focused on paragraph development and strategies for achieving unity of thought and coherence.

Students actively engaged in discussions, posing questions that led to further exploration during the workshop. As part of the practical exercises, participants selected researchable topics within their respective fields, ensuring they applied the guidelines covered in the workshop.

In summary, the academic writing workshop provided graduate students with valuable skills in writing argumentative essays and scholarly papers, which are essential requirements for their thesis or capstone projects. To meet the rigorous academic demands, students not only need to express their viewpoints effectively but also substantiate them with credible citations from scholarly articles and research.
