Ms. Ma. Teresa Orig, the program head of Bachelor of Physical Education (BPE) of Cor Jesu College, promotes research to address health and wellness issues during the First BPE Research Forum held last October 7, 2016 at Cor Jesu College, Digos City, Philippines with the theme “Addressing Issues on Health and Wellness through Research”.

In her inspirational message, Ms. Orig started by presenting the bleak scenario of the worsening health and wellness issues in the country brought about by poor quality of food intake and lack of physical exercise.  She said, “Research drives our engine of wellness.  It plays a vital role in all our programs, services and activities.”

In challenging the students under her program, Ms. Orig added, “We need to get involved in research to fight the menace of modern technology and continue to fight for life, giving emphasis on health and wellness of the people.”

Since BPE students are trained to be experts in physical education, Ms. Orig emphasized to them the importance of enhancing their knowledge and skills in research.  “Research improves dramatically the effectiveness of everything we do.  Our ability to translate what we learn through research into innovative programs is what set us apart.”

Dr. Ida G. Tudy, research professor, echoed Ms. Orig’s point.  She said, “You have just proven that you do not just excel in sports and some other physical activities but also in a scholarly endeavor like research.”

Ms. Orig’s message was inspired by the research outputs of her students presented during the forum. Some of these papers were the following:  HIV Knowledge and Self-Prevention, Internet Addiction and Health Risk among College Students, and Sports Emotion and Athletic Participation.
