On September 16, 2024, Cor Jesu College welcomed the Gawad Kalasag National Selection Team from Manila for the prestigious annual Gawad Kalasag Awards, now in its 24th year. This visit marks a milestone for the college, as it is the school’s first attempt to enter the national competition under the Civil Society Organization (CSO) category. Cor Jesu College has made a remarkable impression, ranking as one of the top entries in this year’s selection process.
The event commenced with a vibrant cultural presentation by the school’s official dance troupe, the TerpsiCorean Performing Group, who performed a tribal dance in honor of the validators. Following the energetic performance, the school’s official band, The Red Ambassadors, gave a musical performance that added to the lively atmosphere of the occasion.
After the performances, Br. Ellakim P. Sosmeña, the President of Cor Jesu College, gave a warm and insightful commentary, followed by remarks from Mr. Robert Padillo of the Office of Civil Defense. Their words underscored the importance of the school’s efforts in disaster risk reduction and community engagement.
As part of the validation, the team conducted a thorough review of key documents related to the school’s disaster risk reduction initiatives. They also interviewed staff members and, in the afternoon, visited Barangay Dulangan in Digos City for a community site inspection, further cementing the school’s contributions to disaster preparedness.

They were also accompanied by Ms. Eirene M. Canlom, the regional focal person for the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).
The visit highlighted the school’s ongoing efforts to support and uplift communities in the area, particularly in disaster preparedness and response. Cor Jesu College’s active role in these initiatives reflects its commitment to making a positive impact, not only within the school community but also in the greater Digos City area.
With the successful conclusion of the field validation, the college is optimistic about its standing in the national competition and looks forward to further contributing to disaster resilience efforts in the region.
